Wade Clark Roof, Emeritus Professor of Religious Studies and Founding Director of the Walter H. Capps Center for the Study of Ethics, Religion, and Public Life at the University of California Santa Barbara, is the recipient of the 2019 Martin E. Marty Award for the Public Understanding of Religion.

In announcing the award, Alice Hunt, Executive Director of the American Academy of Religion, stated that “the Public Understanding of Religion award recognizes extraordinary contributions by individuals whose work has relevance and eloquence that speaks, not just to scholars, but more broadly to various publics as well.”

Roof has made impactful contributions to the sociology of American religion—on topics ranging from religious pluralism to generational change, from spirituality to civil society—which have helped open new conversations among scholars of religion, diverse religious publics, and journalists. Within his extensive and distinguished record of public scholarship, he has written dozens of editorials, delivered scores of public lectures, frequently contributed to broadcast television productions, and helped develop programs to bring the study of religion to new academic communities.

The award recipient is selected by the American Academy of Religion’s Committee on the Public Understanding of Religion. Founded in 1909, the AAR is the world’s largest association of religion scholars with some 8,000 members in North America and abroad. The AAR’s mission is to foster excellence in the academic study of religion and enhance the public understanding of religion.
